The main purpose of the Department of Geography is; To train geographers who use universal knowledge and technology in the best way, who care about research equipped with information that will explain the causes, problems, results, and mutual relations of geographical events, their distribution on a global or regional scale, and will contribute to the solution of environmental problems, and to carry out geographical researches. In the Department of Geography, which aims to be a department that produces, researches and shares information, closely follows information and technology, and contributes to the problems related to the environment, it is aimed to bring research and application activities to the highest level in addition to undergraduate and graduate education.
Marmara University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, in accordance with the letter dated 19. 01. 2001 and numbered 243, in 2001, with the approval of the Council of Higher Education, to be able to conduct research in the field of geography, to work in educational institutions, to work at a high level. was established with the aim of educating graduates who are equipped with geographical knowledge, adhere to ethical values and have the title of Geographers with idealism.
After the Higher Education General Council granted our department the right to formal education at the undergraduate level in accordance with the 7/h article of the Law No. 2547 dated 10.03.2006 and amended with the Law No. 2880, undergraduate education started with 31 students as of the 2006-2007 academic year. Currently, education activities continue with 290 undergraduate, 48 graduate and 22 doctoral students.
Marmara University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Geography, which has a Geographic Information Systems Laboratory and a Mineral and Rocks Laboratory, has a total of 15 academic staff, including 4 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 5 Doctoral Faculty Members and 3 Research Assistants, as of the 2022-2023 academic year. continues its educational activities.
