About the Geography Department


The primary objective of the Department of Geography is to train geographers and conduct geographical research. These geographers are to be equipped with that knowledge and explain the causes of occurrence, problems, consequences, mutual relations and spatial distribution of geographical phenomena on a global or regional scale. These geographers will attach importance to research, contribute to the solution of environmental problems and make optimal use of universal knowledge and technology. In the Department of Geography, which seeks to achieve the goal of becoming a unit that produces, investigates and shares knowledge, closely follows new scientific knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, and contributes by generating solutions to problems that elude geographers. It is aimed that research and applied activities conducted in the department, in addition to undergraduate and graduate education, attain the highest possible level.

The Department of Geography of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Marmara University was established in 2001, pursuant to the letter of the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences dated 19.01.2001 and numbered 243, and with the approval of the Council of Higher Education, for training graduates who will hold the title of Geographer, who are capable of conducting research in the field of Geography, serving in educational institutions, equipped with high level geographical knowledge, committed to ethical values and endowed with idealism.

With the granting to our department, by the General Assembly of Higher Education, of the right to offer formal undergraduate education pursuant to Article 7/h of Law No. 2547 as amended by Law No. 2880, dated 10.03.2006, undergraduate instruction commenced in the 2006–2007 academic year with 31 students. At present, educational activities are being carried out with undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The Department of Geography of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Marmara University, which has one Geographic Information Systems (GIS) laboratory and a mineral and rock exhibition, continues its educational activities in the 2025–2026 academic year with a total of 18 academic staff members, consisting of 4 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors and 3 Research Assistants.
